As physicians, the safety of you and your baby is our top priority. We pride ourselves in offering high quality and safe maternity care. We have advanced training and experience with both “normal” (sometimes called low-risk) and complicated births. Each of us has assisted hundreds or thousands of birthing women, and on average we deliver 2-3 babies per shift at our clinic. We know that each pregnancy and birth is unique, and we deliver personalized care to each of our patients throughout pregnancy.
Our physicians are constantly updating our knowledge and skills. We regularly read and review the latest scientific research, practice emergency procedures, and conduct emergency drills in order to ensure the best possible pregnancy and birth outcomes for our patients. All of our physicians and nurses also participate in the MORE-OB program of professional development and performance improvement. This program emphasizes patient safety and team-management during labour, providing a regular forum for our team to practice safety and emergency drills together. We also regularly participate in conferences and obstetrical update courses so that we are practicing at the cutting edge of obstetrical care. Each of our family physicians is certified in neonatal resuscitation (NRP), and we are qualified and trained to resuscitate your baby if he or she needs help after birth.
In addition to providing care during pregnancy and birth, as family doctors we provide care through all stages of life, from birth to old age. We have extensive training in newborn and baby care, breastfeeding, and paediatrics. As family doctors, we are also experienced dealing with non-pregnancy-related medical problems in a holistic way. We are experienced not only at diagnosing pregnancy complications, but also differentiating these from other medical conditions because we see those other conditions in our regular family practices.
As family doctors we are a part of the community and your care team. We are used to working with all levels of specialists in the community. We also work closely with alternative health-care practitioners, masseuses, counsellors, physiotherapists, chiropractors and others. We have extensive experience helping our non-pregnant patients with mental health problems such as depression, social concerns such as marital discord, and many other health issues. We are able to use this knowledge to assist you during your pregnancy if you have additional health concerns. Our knowledge of both traditional and alternative medicines enables us to offer advice about supplements, diet, exercise and mental health, both during and after pregnancy.
We work closely with the medical specialists in our community and will not hesitate to involve specialists in your care if they are needed. We also have excellent access to rapid specialist care if you need it, including maternal-fetal medicine (high-risk pregnancy) doctors at BC Women’s Hospital and Surrey Memorial Hospital, as well as psychiatrists, geneticists, paediatricians, anaesthetists and obstetricians.
In addition to our extensive training and experience dealing with pregnancy, birth, and newborn-related emergencies, we have additional training with other medical emergencies, including in the emergency department, intensive care unit, and general experience in all fields of medicine. In the unlikely event of an emergency, this training ensures that it is “habit” for us to remain cool and to be able to multi-task efficiently, making rapid decisions, implementing, coordinating, and explaining to you and your care team what is happening.
We pride ourselves in our training and our care. If you have any questions, please ask us!
